Trouble playing greeting or recording the caller's message
Previous  Top  Next

·Call Soft is not answering on the ring I set it to.
Are you using distinctive ring?
Check the "What Happened" log. If you can't find your answer there send us a debug log.

·Call Soft does not play a greeting or record a message:
If you are absolutely sure your modem is a voice modem:
Double click the "Multimedia" icon in Control Panel. Click the "Audio" tab and make sure "Use only preferred devices" is NOT checked.
Double click the phone/modem icon in Control Panel. If there are any modems listed that are not installed in your PC remove them.
That didn't work:
Close Call Soft. Go back to the phone/modem icon in Control Panel and remove your modem from the list and reboot. The system should setup the modem again upon rebooting. Sometime letting the system re-initalize the modem will cause it to work properly. You might have to reboot one more time before the system gets the modems wave devices setup correctly.
That didn't work:
You have two choices:
1.Get modem that will work www.toscintl.com/callsoft/modems.html.
2.Try using an answering system that does not require your modem's driver like Advanced Call Center

·Call Soft plays the greeting fine on the first call but will fails on other calls:
If you are sure you have the proper drivers installed then try this:
1. Close Call Soft.
2. Double click the modems icon in Control Panel.
3. Remove ALL modems from the list.
4. Reboot.
5. Run Call Soft and reselect the modem from the general tab in setup.
6. Test it.

·Call Soft begins playing the greeting or recording a message but then disconnects.
Go to the system tab in setup and UNCHECK "Trust TAPI when asking if call is connected".
That didn't work:
Lower the volume of your greetings or re-record them at a lower lever. What might be happening is when someone is talking, your modem may interpret some of the speech as a tone, for example hitting the 1 key on the phone. This will cause Call Soft to think the caller is trying to access some remote option and stop playing a greeting or recording. If this fixed the problem you should consider a new modem because it's likely to happen again.

You can tell Call Soft to always ignore tones by modifying a registry entry. If you do this you will not be able to check your messages from another phone. To make Call Soft ignore tones click the Windows "Start" button, select run, type regedit.exe and click "OK". Go to HEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> TOSC International -> CallSoft -> Settings -> Default. Right click on "Monitor Digits" and select "Modify". Change the value to 0.

Call Soft insists on answering on a ring number that is different then what I have it set to.
Call Soft keeps showing the same name for every call.
You probably have a phone book entry setup that specifies a "answer on ring" number that is different from the default.
Check the What Happened log.

·Call Soft always picks up the phone even if I answer it before it's suppose to take a message.
Choose Options -> Call Soft from the main menu and go to the Messages tab. Uncheck all the option in "If you answer the phone before ..."

·I can't hear caller leaving a message:
Make sure you have this option turned on in the mailbox properties setup. Silence detection must also be on for this to work.

·Callers get "cut off" when leaving a message.
Turn "Silence detection" off in the mailbox properties setup or turn it down see message tab in setup. This is also caused by your modem interpreting part of the caller's voice as a dial tone and thinks the call has ended. We suggest getting a better modem but you can try checking the option "

·I never hear a beep after a greeting or prior to recording a message.
Remove or replace the beep file, by default it's located c:\program files\Call Soft\system sounds\beep.wav.
If you remove the file Call Soft will attempt to generate it's own beep internally.

·The volume is low when playing a greeting or recording a message:
This is a common problem with US Robotic modems. The only way to adjust this is to record your greetings louder or turn up the gain on your microphone before recording a greeting or click the "Normalize" button on the record greeting window. To do the latter, click the Windows Start button then "Programs" -> "Accessories" -> "Entertainment" then click "Mixer" or "Volume Control". Windows does not provide a way to adjust the volume of your modem directly.

·When Call Soft plays a greeting or records a message it sounds distorted or very noisy.
First re-record your greeting and DON'T click the Normalize button (upper right corner of record greeting window) instead speak softer when recording your greeting. Also un-check normalize messages option on the messages tab in setup if the recorded messages sound noisy or distorted.
That didn't work:
Disable any anti virus program (temporarily of course). If this fixes the problem, configure your anti virus program not to scan .wav files or only scan files that are likely to carry viruses. If you don't want to do this consider getting a faster machine. Between Call Soft trying to create .wav files and your anti virus program checking it every second or so is too taxing for your system.

That didn't work:
Check with the modem manufacture's Web site for updated drivers. Also we see this problem occur on older PC's who's PCI controllers cannot perform satisfactory.

·I get MMSYSTEM032 error or specified format cannot be translated or supported. Use the Capabilities function to view supported formats
This is usually caused by an incorrect wave file format. Windows ME, 2000 and XP require the wave format to be 8khz 16 bit. If you are using an older version of Call Soft or Cool Call (prior to Oct 6 2000 click the about button in setup and note the compile date) we recommend downloading a newer version at http://www.toscintl.com/callsoft. The wave files shipped with this version are in the correct format. However, any wave files that you have created, e.g. personal greeting etc., must be either re recorded or converted. To convert a wave file to the new format follow this procedure.
See converting wave files for more info.
