Distinctive Ring Tab / Priority Call

| Priority call, ordered from your phone company, allows you to establish a list of important telephone numbers on a priority call list. When an incoming call is received from a telephone number that appears on the priority call list, you will receive a distinctive ring for example (short, long, short). Some people have a second line that rings on their main line but with a different ring pattern.

| Earlier version of Windows supported distinctive ring directly so you could buy a modem that handled distinctive ring and everything worked fine. The problem now is Microsoft chose not to support distinctive ring in Windows 2000 and XP. Call Soft supports a pseudo form of distinctive ring. It's able to look at a series of rings and generate a numeric pattern to identify it. You hear short and long rings but Call Soft can't. Instead it looks at the time between ring events. This should be good enough for most distinctive ring users. The key to making this work is to make your rings as different as possible for example 1 long ring for line one and 3 short rings for line two etc.

| To setup distinctive ring go to the distinctive ring tab in setup.

| Add a ring pattern

| Right click in the ring pattern window and select Add.

| Training
|
|
|
| In order for Call Soft to identify a ring pattern it first must know what it looks like. To do this right click on a ring pattern and select train. Call Soft will reinitialize the line and prepare for a call. When you see "Ready to train" call using a method that will cause the ring pattern to occur. When you see "Done training" you may hang up. Call Soft should now recognize this ring pattern.

| Detection Settings

| You should not have to adjust these, but in the event you do, here is what they do.
|

|
| Ring block length in seconds: This is the amount of time to sample the rings. In other words, the time it takes to receive the ring pattern. Typically, 4 to 6 seconds is sufficient to do this. If, when your training, you hear the second ring block and "Done Training" has not appeared, lower the ring block length by a second.

| Variance: When Call Soft encounters a ring pattern you have trained it to recognize it will not always appear exactly as it did during training. There needs to be a way to create a "close enough" scenario. Call Soft does this by using a variance. This value ranges from 5 to 30 and is used when comparing a "just received" ring pattern to those you have setup. The number is actually a percentage of deviation. For example if 1469-1269 is received and the variance is 20 then the current ring time will be compared to (1469 +- 20%) - (1269 +- 20%). If it falls within this window then the current ring pattern is considered a match.

| Manually modifying patterns.
|
| These values should be set using the training method. However, if you have trouble getting Call Soft to detect your ring pattern you may modify them, Open the debug window (double click the "Status" label on Call Soft main window). Call your house using the desired ring pattern and let the phone ring for a least 6 seconds. A lot of data will appear in the debug window but you will need to find where Call Soft is testing the ring patterns it will look something like this:

| The first line is the pattern found on this call. The second line is the test pattern being compared i.e. your pattern the v=209 is the variance. Does the first number in the call pattern (1469) within the first number in your pattern (1327) +- the variance? If not then copy the pattern numbers (1469,1269, and 0) into your ring pattern manually.
